Alef is for Apple- Hebrew Reading Curriculum Review

I am in love with this Curriculum.
My kids absolutely love doing it.
If you do not have an early childhood Alef Beis Curriculum, Click Here and get Alef is for Apple right now.

You will receive a 55 page workbook where each Hebrew letter is connected to English words that begin with that sound. Alef is for Apple. Beis is for Box. Gimmel is for Glasses etc.

The reason I love this idea is that as much as I would love my kids to learn Hebrew at a young age, my four year old simply does not relate to the fact that a house in Hebrew is a Bayit, so coloring a house on a page with a Beis does not really do much for them.

On the other hand, if you look at the example page above, my 5 year old can literally zoom through the book on his own and loves the independence.

And that is just the beginning.

You will receive a bag filed with miniatures that are connected to each letter. On the previous photo we have a small bag of Glitter to glue on the Gimmel. A bag of Buttons for Beis, Ducks for Daled, Crayons for Kaf and so on.

This all makes sense to the little ones and its hands on as they get to glue each bag of goodies onto each letter as they learn it.

And this all comes together in one package. The book and bag of miniatures.

I cannot recommend this enough.

Here is their website- http://www.alefisforapple.com and the prices are amazing.

Have fun!

'Dot by Dot' Creative Kriah Workbook Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

I was fortunate to receive a beautiful copy of  Creative Kriah Workbook, Volume 1 by Dot by Dot to review.

What I personally love about this workbook is the clean and clear look. Click Here to see some sample pages of the book. Every page is color, there are 25 pages of activities for EACH vowel as well as a variety of skill based worksheets which makes practicing to read lots and lots of fun. Just ask my 5 year old. While my kids were all playing outside, I was on my beach chair paging through the workbook- hence the shadows on the pictures below.

My daughter ran over to take a peek and immediately asked me if she could get her crayons, scissors and glue and do some of the activities. It was such a pleasure to watch her do each page. To think she asked ME if she could do them.

You can Click Here to download 6 full color worksheets from the book for your kids to try out.

You can then head on over to www.DotbyDot.org to buy the book before August 1st to get 10% off OR you can enter the Giveaway and win a $25 Gift Certificate to Dot by Dot!

CAP IT Hebrew Reading Program

We were given the awesome opportunity to review the CAP IT Hebrew Reading Program.

It has been a bit of a challenge in the Hebrew Reading department with my 5 year old as she is a very hands-on learner and doesn't enjoy sitting and reading for too long. She would much rather color, paint, draw or dance. Which is fine, but I needed to figure out a way to make reading a little more enjoyable for  her.

Well, along came CAP IT Hebrew Reading, and I can tell you that from the moment we opened the box, my little princess could not wait to begin. I know. I was a bit shocked myself. Maybe it was the box of miniature toys it came with. Maybe it was the bright colors and the simplicity of the pages. Read on to hear more about this brilliant program.

You see, the cleverness of this program is that it provides Tactile Visual Mnemonics™ for every letter in the Alef Bet. In simple English, you get a box filled with miniature toys that serve as the Visual Mnemonics. Each toy in the box looks and sounds like a letter in the Hebrew alphabet.

For example, for the letter BET- there is an actual little ball in a box. You have the "B" sound as well as the visualization of a ball in a box, like the actual letter BET. Simply genius.

There is also a song that connects to each lesson, hence we can get up to do a little dance to our song making reading just super cool. And the thing that really was amazing were the instant results. She read "ABBA BA". She was beyond proud of herself and couldn't wait to go on to the next letter to see what the next toy would be.

The entire curriculum comes in this box:

And in our humble opinion, the best part of all...

This is the PERFECT Hebrew Reading Curriculum. It makes Hebrew reading FUN and the kids see instant results which makes them feel so good about themselves.

Head on over to their website to check it out for yourself...

We also received the CAP IT Read Fluent Hebrew Siddur Edition which focuses on the kid's decoding skills and builds up a word bank of the most common Siddur words.

This was so fabulous for my son who is already davening, but at 100 miles an hour and not really saying the words correctly. It gave him an entirely new insight into what he is saying and how important it is to say the proper words.

This company gets an A+ in my book.

The awesome folks at CAP IT Hebrew Reading have given the readers of A Jewish Homeschool Blog a 20% discount off an entire order -

***Enter HS20 at checkout for 20% off your order!***

In my opinion, this is a great investment in your kids Hebrew Reading education. Highly highly recommended.

If you have any questions in regard to this curriculum, feel free to email me or the wonderful people over at CAP IT Hebrew Reading.

Wishing you all a wonderful week,
Always,

These products were given to me for review purposes. I was not paid for the above posts. All opinions expressed in the above posts are mine.

Parshas Vayechi

I can confidently say that we are very proud supporters of Costco's Kirkland Baby-wipes and Kitchen wipes. I came across another mom blog out there and she brilliantly used the caps of these wipes to make a calendar for her kids.

Now a big goal of mine, being a Jewish homeschooling mom, is taking these awesome idea's and giving them a Jewish twist. So I started saving all the caps of all the wipes but just couldn't come up with a good idea of how to use them in a Jewish way.

Until.... this weeks parshah, where Yakov is blessing his 12 sons. I figured we could tie it all together and give each Shevet the color of their stone on the Kohen Gadols Choshen (High Priests Breast Plate) and then we could use this in a few weeks time again when we learn about the garments of the Kohanim and Kohen Gadol.

So here is how it went:

We hot glued a piece of felt to a card board box cover (one of those office boxes from Office Max). We then hot glued the caps of the wipes onto the felt like this:
Then each munchkin got 6 cards to color specific colors (the color of each Shevets stone)

We then glued the cards onto the tops of the caps and wrote each Shevets name on the correct color card, in order:
I then made a copy of the cover of My Parsah Reader- Sefer Bereishis and laminated it. We cut each one out and stuck a little Velcro sticker behind each one. Each picture depicts the blessing that Yakov gave each son:
HOW AWESOME IS THAT?? The kids LOVE using it and we talk about the different blessings and who got what and where it goes. Just looking at it is so enjoyable. And it was super easy.

Here is a cute little Menashe and Efraim project we made:

That's Yakov in the middle. We acted out the story of Yakov blessing them and switching his hands. That's Efraim on the left, my son made him "special" clothes since he got the first bracha.
Here's another one we did- I just drew the outline of 2 men and the kiddos each colored and glued and stuck whatever they wanted on each man. The Alef is for Efraim and the Mem is for Menashe.
They then traced their hands and we were able to switch the hands to show how Yakov switched his hands.

And here's a really great Alef Beis project that my daughter LOVED. Just cut out colored strips, long and short but make sure they are all the same size. Use one long one and one short one to make templates of the Hebrew Alphabet and have the kids glue on the correct sticks to each letter.

And that's what we've been up to. Have a great week!

Chanukah Activities and Giveaway!!!

A few things we've been up to lately...

Chanukah Sensory Table:

Sorting biggest to smallest:

Dreidel Paintings:

Chanukah Collages with Chanukah Foam stickers:

Building a Chanukah Menorah with Shapes, Hammer and Nails:

A "stained glass" Chanukah Menorah- you can make a dreidel like this too:

Chanukah Menorah made out of colored collage squares- glitter for the candles:

Here is a very exciting project we are working on: Continent Boxes...
Basically, each box represents one of the seven continents.
I added Israel to the mix, cos its our country and it made sense to do so.
Inside each box, you put photos, chatchkes, books, any thing that pertains to that continent.
This is a classic Montessori project, but I am giving it a Jewish twist. I am looking for photos of different types of Jews and Shuls in the different parts of the world as well as traditional Jewish recipes. My husband happens to have a huge collection of Tanya's (an incredible Jewish book on Chassidic Philosophy written by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi) that were printed all over the world. The only continent box without a Tanya that was printed there is Antarctica. We did manage to find a photo of a Jewish scientist lighting a Menorah in Antarctica, which was very cool.
Once we have filled the boxes I will take photos of what treasures we found, and if anyone has any good ideas of other Jewish things to fill them with, please share!
